Review

Robert Zemeckis tries to emulate Alfred Hitchcock in this classically constructed thriller, but is only able to do so on a technical level. What Lies Beneath has the eerie atmosphere and the big, well-delivered scares, but it lacks the intelligence and creativity in the writing to pull us completely into its realm. Zemeckis does a stylish job, however, filling his film with bright, crisp images and using time and silence to his effect. The film is refreshing in style, if not in essence.
