George Lucas' renowned lowkey sci-fi has got an inspired Robert Duvall, some intruiging observations and a climatic finale, but lacks nerve and potency for too long. The famous visuals are not uncreative, but except for the final scenes, they give the film a confined, unspatial atmosphere that serve more to limit the characters vitality than give a truly claustrophobic feel. Despite Duvall's efforts, Lucas is never really able to front the humane side of his characters.
