Review
With South Park, Trey Parker and
Matt Stone has made names for themselves with political satire that have
been both spot-on, relevant and funny. Headed by Parker, they go for an
even bigger score with the ambitious Team America. A film that at
first sight knocks USA's tendency to act as (you got it) world police in
international conflicts. But Parker/Stone don't stop at that - they keep
satirizing everything that comes in their way, never worrying that they
might be getting in over their heads.
Because that is exactly what they do.
Satire should be sharp and well-pointed. Team America is pointed
in every which way. Prehaps the aim was to be politically incorrect and
independent, but when you're mocking everything you're just leaving
behind a messy, indifferent, insignificant and arrogant document. The
animation style is a breath of fresh air, and there are several moments
of outrageous comedy (I really liked the "Matt Damon" line),
but as a whole, Team America is a frustrating, immature and
reckless film. It is all over the place. Michael Bay may have a point or
two to make.
