Review
This extremely traditionally structured
film is unmistakably banal, largely predictable and archetypical to the
bone, but The School of Rock never really pays much attention to
any of these flaws. It unfolds naïvely and untroubled as a piece of
simple entertainment intertwined with what it feels is an important
tribute to classic rock and roll (mainly from the 70s). And although it
might be a bit too childish for its target audience (it might have been
more on target with a wee bit older kids), its charm and warmth grows on you
and notches up a delightful and good-hearted finale that ultimately
makes the film work. Jack Black is engaging (almost embarrasingly so) in
the lead, while Joan Cusack's performance... is hard to nail down,
actually.
