Review

In O'Horten, Bent Hamer continues to depict the solitude and wasted resources of the ageing man, and does so with warmth and humour. The difference is that this time, he takes us on a somewhat more adventurous ride - a kind of Sofies verden for retirees - in which our protagonist, Odd Horten, tries to deal with losing his only stable point in life as he retires from his 40 year position as an engine driver. As usual, Hamer presents us with a skewed look at life and brings us in touch with people and destinies that wouldn't normally catch ones eye. In O'Horten, Hamer unmasks a few boogeymen and suggests they might not be as harmful as we'd think. It's a warm film with a fundamental belief in mankind. Slow-moving and ostensibly unremarkable, but with a soulful core that will reveal itself to the patient viewer. The now almost Danish Norwegian actor Bård Owe makes a fine homecoming in the title role.
