Review

The manipulative tearjerker Nights in Rodanthe will deliver the goods for anyone looking for a sentimental romantic drama, even if the dramaturgy is contrived and the characters underdeveloped. Richard Gere and Diane Lane team up for the third time in their career, and go through the motions halfheartedly. Their performances are technically apt, but they lack the depth needed to make the narrative resonant and necessarily powerful. Much of the blame must be given to first-time director George C. Wolfe, who is unable to put any personal mark on his film. With that said, the film is slickly enough written to be able to evoke emotion above the average chick lit level. Scott Glenn is well-cast as a forlorn husband, and James Franco steals the show with a small uncredited part as Gere's son.
