Review

Nailbiting, delicately scripted underwater cold war drama with all the good ingredients of a genre film, handled with care and deftness by a John McTiernan at the height of his career. Even though the film is stuck in the traditional mentality of its era and turns out to be a not too concealed America worship, it does handle its rather complex political and characterological material with subtlety and insight, making the film a satisfactory experience from more than one point of view. If you like classic Alistar MacLean, you'll certainly enjoy this film as well. A young and fresh Alec Baldwin (at the time he could still talk normally) delivers a sympathetic and active performance, whereas Sean Connery excels as the layered Captain Ramius, and the all-star supporting performers conclude an impressively acted piece.
