The
Enforcer (1976) Preceded
by:
Magnum
Force (1973)
Poor Harry Callahan. No matter how many bad guys he takes down and how many softy mouths he stops, he just doesn't get any happier. On the contrary, rather. Well, maybe he has had some time to think about his right-wing violent nature, albeit without being able to stop himself. What is unfortunate, however, is that the plot and people surrounding him seem to require being made increasingly stereotypical and foolish in order for Harry to come off as the clever one, let alone the good guy. In The Enforcer, he'll hopefully meet his match in the average viewer. The structure and premise of this third entry is a carbon copy of the previous two films, and in the hands of semi-talented craftsmen, the ambiguity and nuances that made the original vibrant and timely are gone. Where number one had attitude, number three is just whiny. And Clint finally seems to believe the lines he's delivering, unfortunately. What is left here is an oversimplified anti-leftist, anti-intellectual premonition to the largely unimpressive 80s action formula.
