Nominated
for the ACID award in Cannes 2006, this satire has a universal appeal and an
art house tone. With its polished, conspicious set design backboning
the cold and observing (at times voyeuring) approach, the film is both
un-Norwegian and arch-Norwegian at the same time. Technically and
thematically, Den brysomme mannen is impressive and highly interesting. But there's
something complacent and predisposed about the screenplay and much of
the social satire it contains. We realize what the filmmakers want to
say long before they get around to saying it, thus making the final part
of the film more of a formality than an intriguing investigation of a
mystery. Den brysomme mannen remains detached and aloof - never
really allowing the viewer to get under its skin to probe the many
amusing and interesting comments it has to make.
