Review

This cult classic is first and foremost a brilliant visual and atmospherical achievement by Canadian director Vincenzo Natali. The claustrophobical feel of the film is particularly remarkable when the limited budget with which it was produced is taken into account. Made during the toddler period of CGI-effects, Cube has some apparent weaknesses in the special effects department (notably the depiction of the outer shell towards the end), but for most of its running time, this is a stunning, suspenseful premise movie of the classic sort. The idea itself is effective, and although Natali and his writing crew never are able to come up with any philosophical or poetic conclusions of any particular inventiveness, Natali's direction is thoroughly delicate, making the film stylistically unmitigated.
