Le concile de pierre (2006)
This conventional mystery turned semi-supernatural thriller is lacking in most every aspect - mainly the artistic departments. The story is trite and uncreative, and if screenwriters Stephane Cabel and Guillaume Nicloux didn't make complete fools of themselves, I suspect the Jean-Christophe Grangé novel on which the film is based is likewise. From mysterious, ominous strangers, through Messiah themes and pseudo-mysticism, Le concile de pierre picks bits and pieces from traditional storytelling without getting much desired effect. Guillaume Nicloux direction is undistinguished, but I don't know many filmmakers who could have made this into a good film. Monica Bellucci's wholehearted performance and the beautiful Nicolas Thau are what you should keep your eye on.
