Review

Paul Newman reprises his Eddie from The Hustler. In this semi-stylish Martin Scorsese-directed film, he is a gray-haired has-been who gets his kicks from conning people and charming young ladies. Newman has and is fun in the lead, but despite some good scenes, the film is ultimately clichéed and formulaic. Everything happens when expected, and as with many movies involving sports, the pool sequences that should have been exciting, are simply routine. Tom Cruise is energetic, but brings little else to his role (although he looks good early on as an arrogant, fairly dim kid). Look for John Turturro and Forest Whitaker in pleasant supporting roles.
