Review
The
cute and
very
talented Freddie Highmore and the enjoyably peculiar Johnny Depp gives
this Tim Burton-rendition
of the classic Roald Dahl novel a very sound foundation from which to
spin its enjoyable,
if somewhat predictable and repetitive
story. The film looks magnificent and thrives on Burton's appropriate
direction, but the story and moral still comes off a little stiff. On
the other hand, Burton makes his film effective for adults as well as
children through some daring politically incorrect turns (at last
from the pov of
American cinema) and also provides a very moving father/son-element
between Depp and the impressive Christopher Lee. This is far from the
first, and probably not the last, Burton/Depp-collaboration.
But
although it is not their best, it is an amusing film which has
got something for everyone.
